State of the States

January 29, 2013

Published since 2006 by the Equality Federation and Equality Federation Institute, the State of the States report is an in-depth look at the sustainability, strength, and stability of state-based organizations that advance equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

Over the past seven years, our movement for equality has celebrated wins and sustained losses; we’ve forged ahead, and we’ve stepped back; we’ve thrived, and we’ve faltered.

Through it all, there’s no question that momentum is on our side -- in every community in every state across this nation. Each year, State of the States has faithfully documented that momentum as reflected in the capacity of our state-based organizations.

The State of the States report surveys all current Equality Federation member organizations in the spring of each year. The survey is sent by email, and responses are collected over several months.

Each year, the survey includes approximately 25 questions, some with multiple responses. We report both the mean and median scores to allow for most accurate understanding and use.

In the reports below, you can see the growing capacity of our movement over the past seven years and understand how our success is tied to state-based organizations that are on the ground everyday fighting for equality.
