Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults make up a large proportion of the LGBT community, yet are one of the most understudied populations. With 10,000 people turning 65 every day, many of whom are LGBT, it is essential that we understand the values, needs, wants and lifestyle preferences of LGBT older adults.
The Communications Director is a full-time position which will set and guide the strategy for all communications, websites, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate Equality Florida's mission and brand. You hold the voice of Equality Florida in your hands and must be a master storyteller.
Throughout this past summer, the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP organized and led Moral Freedom Summer. This ambitious project was a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the original Mississippi Freedom Summer and a massive grassroots organizing effort in response to the alarmingly regressive policies that were coming out of state legislature, including the worst voter suppression law in the nation.
State-based organizations across the country are advancing major progress in the communities we call home -- where the work is hard, but the impact is great. Nearly every week, we hear about another victory that provides LGBT people with the protection, respect, and dignity they need and deserve, but far too often, these wins are unrecognized by the broader community.
2014 highlights.
One of the greatest challenges for the state-based LGBT movement is securing funding and resources to do the hard but necessary work on the ground in the communities we call home. For groups in the South, this continues to be a struggle. LGBT advocates in this region work to win equality for their communities with limited funding and capacity, all while facing often intense political and religious opposition.

Equality Federation and Equality South Dakota condemn South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard for signing into law a discriminatory religious exemption bill that would prevent children in need of homes a fair opportunity to find a loving family.
The Utah Legislature passed a historic bill on Wednesday this week repealing a state law prohibiting supportive discussions of “homosexuality” in public and charter school curricula and classrooms. This victory has been months in the making.
A judge in Pinedale, Wyoming faced discipline from the Wyoming Commission on Judicial Conduct and Ethics for a newspaper interview she gave stating that she would not officiate same-sex marriages. She said, “When law and religion conflict, choices have to be made.”
Equality Federation regrets to report that several organizations, including two Federation member groups, have been targeted by acts of vandalism. Someone smashed a window of Equality Florida’s Orlando office in late February.
