Updated with Tina’s speech:

Tina Kotek

OR House Speaker Tina Kotek stands with Portland Mayor Charlie Hales.

Tina Kotek, a Representative from Oregon, became the nation’s first openly lesbian House Speaker when she was sworn into office in 2013. She’s a longtime advocate of LGBTQ equality but is also well-known for her advocacy efforts around housing, health care, and other important issues that most impact marginalized communities.

Kotek is set to speak at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week, but, earlier this month, attendees of Equality Federation’s Leadership Conference had the honor of getting to know her at our opening reception, organized with support from hosts Basic Rights Oregon.

Check out the instagram video clips from our reception in Oregon, and click here for more.

We are where we are because people work really hard and we work in coalition. We work on things together that are not just about making sure the LGBTQ community is safe and taken care of – BRO and other allies have worked on racial justice, workers rights, immigrant rights…. – Tina Kotek
